Illusions a novel by Richard Back (1977) with the subtitel The Adventures of a Reluctant Messiah. is a fabulous story, combining both spiritual and intellectual view on the universe.
In the preface, Richard Bach says that he did not intend to write any more books, but then an idea took hold of him did not want to let go. 'What if..."
"What if a Siddhartha or a Jesus came into our time, with power over the illusions of the world because he knew the reality behind them". Finally Bach wrote this 'modern' fictional story, where he meets a man, Donald Shimoda, who is actually a Messiah, who tries to teach people that we can all be our own healer. We don't need anyone else to heal us. We need to believe in our own creativity.
An insight that now - 2019 - finally is sinking into the consciousness, of a lot more people than in the 1980s New Age. Shimoda does not want his 'miracles' to be misused by show-biz (Do you remember Uri Geller?). The collective mind was then mostly in a state of 'disbelief'.
40 years later quantum physics is ready do explain many of these mysteries.
